Nomad is a 100% polyester ...

Nomad is a 100% polyester textile that looks and feels like cotton with a soft hand and beautiful drape.  The large-scale pattern combines just the right balance of crisp white stripes on a neutral base with a pop of clear color. The aesthetic is comfortable, clean and fresh contributing to a sense of serenity in an interior. Nomad is available in four color options. The reversible fabric can be installed as woven with stripes running horizontally or railroaded for a vertical stripe. While Nomad is washable at high temperatures for use in hospitals, it is sophisticated enough to add to any hospitality or residential project.

This richly striped cotton print upholstery allows for subtle changes in color, fine details and high contrast. Because the striping is vertical and the repeat large, Tuscany is as exquisite on walls and windows as it is on banquettes and large scale pieces. On small scale chairs you can create a unique environment where every piece is different but cohesive. A base cloth in a durable cotton rep weave is used for high abrasion. A special after printing steam finish is used to remove excess dye-stuffs and fix the colors for top performance in lightfastness and crocking. Mills chose a color palette that reflects the vibrance and landscapes of Tuscany.

Vox is an upholstery that employs the Climatex® Dualcycle™ construction, a weave structure that brings together both natural and synthetic materials in a manner that allows for easy disassembly.  The natural layer (composed of wool and Lenzing rayon) can easily be separated from the synthetic Cradura® layer using a simple industrial process that has been established worldwide. Once separated, the synthetic fibers can be recycled while the natural fibers are able to biodegrade. Climatex® Dualcycle™ has been awarded Cradle to Cradle Silver and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications, and has won an IF Product Design award (2013) as well as the Green Good Design Award (2013), Materialica Design + Technology Silver Award (2012) and Good Design Award (2012).

In 1993, Susan Lyons, then Creative Director of Designtex, began to research the possibility of developing a collection of ecological fabrics, contacting William McDonough, an architect and leader in the field of sustainable design, to get his input. A partnership emerged between Lyons, McDonough, his colleague the chemist Michael Braungart, and a Swiss-based mill, with the goal of developing a fabric that could break down and return safely to the earth after its useful life. The creative fruit of this unprecedented collaboration was Designtex’s first Climatex® upholstery collection, launched in 1995. This latest Climatex® launch comprises seven new upholstery styles that continue to use a design and manufacturing process that has proven its sustainability over close to two decades, boasting Cradle to Cradle Gold and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications. In addition, Climatex® is designed to provide climate-regulating properties in response to changes in body temperature: its extreme breathability, optimized moisture management, outstanding heat reflection and balanced warmth transfer ensure sustained well-being in all seating applications. With a carefully selected range of texture, weave, and color effects, the latest Climatex® collection offers a refined aesthetic ideally suited for corporate, residential, and boutique hospitality settings.

In 1994, Designtex introduced Sportswear, the industry’s first extreme performance woven textile developed specifically for indoor and outdoor stadium seating. Developed in collaboration with textile designer Nancy Giesberger, Sportswear’s robustness is due to its unique construction, which utilizes PVC-coated polyester yarns for both the warp and the weft in a dense weave that is ideally suited to upholstery. Famously, the fabric’s resilience was demonstrated by testing to 600,000 double rubs with a wire screen abradant. In this new generation of Sportswear fabrics—once again designed in collaboration with Giesberger—the PVC-coated yarns have been re-engineered to clear them of phthalates, allowing the products to comply with the phthalates restrictions of State of California Prop 65. The new yarns have also been redesigned to create finer threads, allowing for greater subtleties in the weave construction. In addition, the inclusion of pearlized yarn in the fill direction introduces a wide range of color and sheen effects into the collection.

Inspired by the art of traditional Japanese paper folding, this innovative textile, which won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for Best of the Best 2013, can be used either as a panel fabric or a drapery. When installed as a drapery, the fabric’s regular angled surfaces are engineered to provide acoustic absorption. Chiyogami is woven with an exclusive production and finishing process to create its origami-inspired forms. The unique method of shaping the pleats results in a three-dimensional textile with striking structural qualities, accentuated by the play of light and shadow. The crisp lines that define the angled surfaces are highlighted by color accents, giving the fabric an even more dramatic three-dimensional effect.

Big in scale and bold in color, Tetris utilizes a tightly constructed cell weave to create an oversized pixilated version of an ikat pattern. In each colorway, bands of saturated color—often placed together in unexpected juxtapositions interact playfully against a neutral background that effectively unifies the overall design. Contemporary in style while evoking traditional weaving techniques, Tetris is a statement upholstery suitable for hospitality, corporate and education settings.

In 2013, Designtex launched Loop ...

In 2013, Designtex launched Loop to Loop, the first upholstery fabric to be made from “recycling recycled” panel fabric. An unprecedented collaboration amongst innovative players all along the supply chain—including Steelcase, Designtex, Canadian textile manufacturer Victor, and Unifi, maker of the recycled fiber REPREVE—yielded a successful way to close the loop, by incorporating cutting waste from furniture production into new goods. Hyphen makes use of the same infrastructure for reclaiming and recycling commercial textiles that was established during the development of Loop to Loop, and its construction is a similar blend of postconsumer recycled polyester (made from PET water bottles) and preconsumer recycled polyester (made from the cutting waste from postconsumer recycled panel fabric). In addition, the Loop-to-Loop-style construction has now been certified as Facts Gold. Hyphen offers a simple overall pattern featuring a single-tone background, with the accent “hyphens” forming a regular grid across its surface. From a distance it has the appearance of a solid, but in feel it has a subtle texture created through a specialized finishing process that shrinks the yarns to produce a puckered effect.
